Research

Offshore deformation in the Taltal Seismic Gap

Because the Taltal area is a seismic gap due for a possible major earthquake, we study the offshore geologic structures to understand what future earthquakes and tsunamis could be like. We combine seismic imaging, new video recordings of the trench from the Fendouzhe submersible, and measurements of seafloor displacement. The projects involved are IDOOS (2021–2028), JCATE (2026), and CINCA (1995).

Architecture of the subduction system in south Chile

We are looking at the structure of the incoming plate, trench and upper plate to study the areas where the 2010 M8.8 and 1960 M9.5 earthquakes happened. We are mostly looking for faulting in the accretionary prism and incoming plate, which could have added — and can add — extra height to tsunami waves. We use data from the CEVICHE experiment.

The Andreanof Experiment: Volcanic arc formation, forearc deformation & seismic behavior in the central Aleutians subduction zone

This was an active-source seismic experiment in the Andreanof segment to explore arc-crust formation, the factors controlling megathrust slip behaviour, and the structural deformation in this area.

Submarine deformation by the intra-arc strike-slip system in Southern Chile: the Liquiñe-Ofqui Fault System

In southern Chile, transcurrent deformation is primarily accommodated along the intra-arc Liquiñe-Ofqui Fault System (LOFS), located within a fjord–archipelago setting. We use seismic reflection data and local seismicity to characterize a submarine trace of the LOFS and assess its geo-hazard potential.

Subducted plate crustal thickness along the Perú–Chile margin

Oceanic plate crustal thickness modifies the buoyancy of the subducting slab and can impact slab dip. We used receiver functions to constrain how the thickness of the downgoing plate changes along the Perú–Chile margin.

Slab interface frictional heterogeneity & slip behavior

A CIDER 2023 project exploring whether the recurrence and size of slow slip events can be reproduced by varying lithology and heterogeneity along a Cascadia-like interface, using the HBI code (Ozawa et al., 2023), without necessarily invoking high pore-fluid pressure.

Nazca Ridge crustal structure

We used wide-angle seismic data, gravity-density modeling, and flexure modeling to study the Nazca Ridge. We reveal anomalously thick crust (~17 km) beneath the ridge, elastic thickness below 5 km, and a layer-3 Poisson's ratio of 0.28±0.02 implying elevated mantle potential temperature when formed.

Deformación sub-marina en el gap sísmico de Taltal

Como el área de Taltal es un gap sísmico a la espera de un posible gran terremoto, estudiamos las estructuras geológicas submarinas para comprender cómo podrían ser los futuros terremotos y tsunamis. Combinamos imágenes sísmicas, nuevos videos fotográficos de la fosa obtenidos con el sumergible Fendouzhe y mediciones del movimiento del fondo marino. Los proyectos involucrados son IDOOS (2021–2028), JCATE (2026) y CINCA (1995).

Arquitectura del sistema de subducción en el sur de Chile

Estudiamos la estructura de la placa oceánica, la fosa y la placa continental en las zonas donde ocurrieron los terremotos de 2010 (M8.8) y 1960 (M9.5). Nos enfocamos principalmente en fallas del prisma de acreción y de la placa oceánica, fallas que quizás sumaron, y pueden en el futuro sumar, altura a las olas de tsunami. Usamos datos del proyecto CEVICHE.

El Experimento Andreanof: formación del arco volcánico, deformación de antearco y comportamiento sísmico en las Islas Aleutianas centrales

Experimento de sísmica de fuente activa en el segmento Andreanof para estudiar la formación de corteza en arcos de islas volcánicas, los factores que controlan el deslizamiento del contacto de placas tectónicas y la deformación estructural en esta zona.

Deformación submarina del sistema de rumbo intra-arco en el sur de Chile: el Sistema de Fallas Liquiñe-Ofqui

En el sur de Chile, la deformación transcurrente se acomoda principalmente a lo largo del Sistema de Fallas Liquiñe-Ofqui (LOFS), ubicado en un entorno de fiordos y archipiélagos. Usamos datos de sísmica de reflexión y sismicidad local para caracterizar una traza submarina del LOFS y evaluar su potencial de peligros geológicos.

El espesor cortical de la placa oceánica modifica la flotabilidad del slab subductante y puede influir en su ángulo de subducción. Usamos funciones receptoras para restringir cómo cambia el espesor de la placa subductante a lo largo del margen Perú–Chile.

Heterogeneidad friccional de la interfaz interplaca e implicancias en su estilo de deslizamiento

Un proyecto CIDER 2023 que explora si la recurrencia y el tamaño de los eventos de deslizamiento lento pueden reproducirse variando litología y heterogeneidad en una interfaz tipo Cascadia, usando el código HBI (Ozawa et al., 2023), sin necesariamente invocar alta presión de fluidos.

Estructura cortical de la Dorsal de Nazca

Usamos datos de sísmica de refracción, modelamiento flexural y gravimétrico. Encontramos una corteza anómalamente gruesa (~17 km) en la dorsal, espesor elástico menor a 5 km y una razón de Poisson en la capa 3 de 0,28±0,02 que implica una temperatura potencial elevada del manto al momento de la formación de la dorsal.
